A simpler process for eligible grants of probate
Since 2 June 2026, solicitors throughout Ireland have been able to submit eligible applications for grants of probate through the Courts Service Portal. The nationwide service is an important step in modernising probate and can make the application process more efficient, secure and consistent.
What has changed?
For eligible estates, a solicitor can now prepare and submit the application online, pay the court fee electronically and receive progress updates through the Portal. Revenue information is included using the Notice of Acknowledgement, reducing repeated data entry.
The Portal also generates a Statement of Truth of Executor. This is signed electronically by each applying executor and replaces the traditional Executor's Oath for an online application.
Which applications can be submitted online?
The online service currently applies only to grants of probate lodged by solicitors where the deceased left a valid will. At present:
personal applications and applications on intestacy are not supported;
foreign-domicile estates cannot be submitted through the Portal;
the deceased must have died on or after 5 December 2001; and
each applicant must be over 18, have decision-making capacity and be named as an executor in the will.
Original documents are still required
An online application does not remove every paper requirement. The original will, any codicils or relevant maps, together with certified copies, must still be sent to the Probate Office with the cover sheet produced by the Portal.
Processing times: Digital filing can reduce errors and avoid postal lodgement, but a grant is not automatic. Times vary and any missing information or Probate Office query can delay the application.
